Dr. Mary Lawrence Ends Campaign
for Minnesota’s Second District
When I entered this race I had two objectives: to restore opportunity to America’s middle-class and to unseat Rep. John Kline. As passionate as I am about enhancing opportunity and strengthening our economy, I am equally steadfast in my belief in the Democratic Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party. At this juncture, it is clear that I would not win the DFL endorsement through the caucus process. While I wholeheartedly believe that I could win the Primary, and go on to win the General, this pursuit would deeply divide and harm our party. That is something that I cannot do in good conscience. I am a Democrat, and I am a physician. I have sworn the Hippocratic Oath: “First, do no harm.” To this end, I have decided to end my campaign.
I remain committed to electing a DFLer to serve the people of Minnesota’s Second District. I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from people across the District and across the Country. I am also very fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented staff and am grateful for their work. I thank the people of the Second District for offering me the opportunity to run for this seat to represent their voices in Washington. Working together, we can elect Democrats up and down the ballot and help Minnesota families get ahead.
